Raising a family is a wild, crazy, dance in your underwear, kind of ride. They are so hard, and you sit down once your kids are in bed with a glass of vino and don’t even want it anymore because you are so tired… I know I have done this so many times, and I sit there wondering how my parents seemed to have it all together while raising 3 kids. Overall the message that this book left with me was that as exhausted parents some days are tough. I am assuming the day will eventually arrive when I do not treat a free bar as a challenge to drink as much as I can in short a time as possible, but unfortunately for Simon that day has not yet arrived. Simon’s work do was do was actually very posh, and alas came complete with my nemesis- a free bar. All the gin.Įllen, at some points in this book, had me thinking… is this me?!?! Some days as a parent I just find myself looking at other the other parents out there that are doing such a great job, and think “Why can’t I be like them?”, when in reality I think we are all just surviving and looking forward to whatever it is that keeps our sanity.

I’m going to share with you throughout some of the quotes that had me belly laughing.į*** wine, I’m going straight for the gin. Like I said earlier, this book was laugh out loud funny. Ellen decides to go out on a whim and take a chance in her career that may or may not turn out for the best. Feeling insecure about her parenting, she makes large goals of no-screen time, paying extra attention to healthy meals… when in reality she is just trying to hold her life together at the end of a day while re-filling her wine glass numerous time. She laughs and secretly makes fun of the Mums who are making gluten-free, no sugar muffins, and only having a small glass of Pinot Grigio at their get togethers. She is a wife, and a working mom who struggles to keep the pace of her busy life. The reader is introduced to Ellen (Mummy), who has just turned 39 years old. The type of reader who will enjoy this book are the ones that love to laugh out loud while they read, were or are an exhausted parent, and are comfortable with swearing and drinking!Ī quick synopsis of this novel is that it started as a blog, and a Facebook page. Not only is she pee your pants funny, but she turned out to be a lot less whiny and a lot more ballsy than I thought. But about halfway through, the main character Ellen, started to really turn a corner for me. I remembered thinking at about the 60 page mark… I don’t know where this is going, and how I am going to like it. Harper Collins Canada sent me a copy of it to review, and I’m so glad they did.
